I’m proud to announce my latest project as Overall Visual Effects Supervisor is with Steve McQueen on the Small Axe anthology series. It’s been a pleasure to work with such a talented director and on such an important series of films.
Overall Visual Effects Supervisor via Lipsync on Jonny Depp’s latest film ‘Minamata’.
The film's visual effects fell into two main categories - creating early 1970s environments of Minimata in Japan and New York and enhancing the prosthetic work done onset for the deformities and effects of mercury poisoning on the residents of Minamata. We spent a lot of time researching how Minamata looked back then - the work of Eugene Smith was extremely useful and various documentaries were great reference for what we needed to recreate.
The environment work was achieved through several techniques, as well as digital matte paintings we cleaned up modern day buildings and ‘removed civilisation’ to recreate the remoteness of 1970s Minamata. We modelled period Japanese buildings and even modelled a full cg factory which gave us a lot freedom to cope with the different lighting setups and angles needed between scenes. To populate the scenes we created period vehicles such as a full cg train, various fishing boats and even a cg crowd simulation to enhance and fill out a protest scene which already had many extras. The New York environment was mainly focused around the Life magazine office and was handled through digital matte painting and of course there were plenty of bluescreens to key throughout the film.
The work on the victims of Minamata involved cleaning up prosthetic fingers, some tricky wire removals and repositioning of actors eyes to mimic the effects of mercury poisoning.
We worked closely with Director Andrew Levitas which was a real pleasure, he always pushed to get the best out of the shots and came up with ways to enhance what was captured in camera and and it was equally great having Cinematographer Benoit Delhomme working with us throughout the project to make sure our work was in line with his vision.
With such great acting talent on screen visual effects needed to be invisible, establish the period and setting and not distract from the powerful story at the centre of this film
Role: Overall Visual Effects Supervisor Top Boy season 3
It was a great experience to work on the Netflix reboot of Top Boy. It was such a great show it should never have been cancelled in the first place so it was good to see Drake help get it started again. One of my favourite projects to work on to date.
